BVM&S PhD CertSHP DCHP DipECBHM MRCVS Senior Lecturer in Farm Animal Health and Production Image Alastair Macrae is a Senior Lecturer in Farm Animal Health and Production, and Head of the Dairy Herd Health and Productivity Service (DHHPS). He is also Director of Farm Animal Veterinary Services, with overall daily management responsibility for the Farm Animal Practice as well as the DHHPS. The DHHPS was started at the University 35 years ago, and (despite its name!) provides consultancy advice to dairy, beef and sheep farms on all aspects of health and productivity with the aim of preventing disease and maximising farm profitability. His main research interests include cattle and sheep nutrition and its effects on productivity and disease, as well as the welfare of the dairy cow and her calf around calving. He holds further postgraduate qualifications including the RCVS Certificate in Sheep Health and Production, and RCVS Diploma in Cattle Health and Production. Teaching Alastair gives lectures on dairy cow husbandry as part of the 1st, 2nd and GEP courses, and also lectures in the Farm Animal Clinical Course in 4th year. He is the Course Organiser for the ICC Farm Animal Course in 4th year, and is also the organiser for the Final Year Herd/Flock Health rotation. He teaches as part of the Herd/Flock Health rotation in Final Year, involving visits to dairy farms to investigate herd health problems such as mastitis, lameness and metabolic disease.
