Dick Vet top for veterinary science in UK

The Dick Vet has come top in the UK in the 2022 ShanghaiRanking for veterinary science.  

The ShanghaiRanking is considered the most comprehensive and objective ranking of world universities by subjects and ranks 54 subjects from over 5,000 universities across 956 countries and regions.  

This accolade is a pleasing acknowledgement of the School’s commitment to providing a unique centre of excellence in clinical activity, teaching and research. 

Consistent success 

The School enjoys consistent success in subject rankings. It has ranked first in the UK for veterinary science in the Guardian League Tables for six years running and has topped The Times and The Sunday Times' Good University Guide for veterinary medicine for seven years running. In addition, QS World Rankings placed the School as second in the UK for veterinary science. 

Student satisfaction 

In addition to its high performing subject rankings, the School also excels in student satisfaction, receiving 90 per cent overall satisfaction in the 2022 National Student Survey (NSS) results, with 94 per cent overall teaching satisfaction. 

The annual NSS collects the views of over 500,000 students across the UK and is regarded as an important tool for students deciding where to study.  

Research excellence 

The School’s success in the ShanghaiRankings follows the recent announcement of the School’s success in the 2022 Research Excellence Framework, which ranked the veterinary and agricultural research conducted at the School and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) as the most powerful in the UK.  

In a joint application from the School’s research arm the Roslin Institute with SRUC, the institutions' research environment was classified to be 100 per cent world-leading or internationally excellent for agriculture, food or veterinary sciences research.  

The Vet School and SRUC submission was also assessed as being 100 per cent world-leading or internationally excellent in terms of the impact its research work has on the wider society. 

The School is home to three clinical practices with hospitals attached on the purpose-built Easter Bush Campus, each providing the very best clinical care to our patients. Our clinical facilities offer patients and students alike an unparalleled experience due to our staff, facilities and multidisciplinary research.  

I'm incredibly pleased that the School's commitment to our students, our teaching and our research is reflected in this latest set of rankings. These are of course only indicators, but I truly believe that we offer a world-class experience, and these results provide an opportunity for me to acknowledge and thank our fantastic staff and students.
