Massive Open Online Courses

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) emerged in 2012 at the University of Edinburgh. Using the Coursera consortium, we offer short online courses in a range of subjects, all entirely free of charge.

The Vet School has produced a number of MOOCs since then including:

  • Animal Behaviour and Welfare
  • The Truth About Cats & Dogs
  • Poultry Behaviour and Welfare
  • Equine Nutrition
  • EdiVET
  • Sustainable Global Food Systems

In 2023, a new MOOC – Animal Welfare in the Clinic – will be launching.  The MOOCs have hundreds of thousands of participants and continue to be popular with new students, professionals, and the public.

DEU’s role with MOOC development has included project management, pedagogical advice, development, and quality assurance. Annual reports are submitted to QA Committees.

There are also associated research project with ‘The Truth About Cats and Dogs’ MOOC, which has seen MSc students use survey data to analyse effectiveness of the MOOC, as well as changes in human behaviour and practice, to improve the welfare of animals.
