Heather Bacon is appointed OBE in New Year Honours list

Heather Bacon, the Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education (JMICAWE) Veterinary Welfare Education and Outreach Manager has been appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the New Year Honours list 2021. 

Heather is responsible for developing and delivering the overseas projects of the JMICAWE, and works internationally to develop capacity in the areas of veterinary skills, animal welfare, animal behaviour and veterinary ethics. Through her role at the JMICAWE she has worked with NGOs, veterinary, and political organisations to develop veterinary education initiatives particularly on the topics of optimising veterinary care, dog population management, zoo animal, and exotic pet welfare.

Heather is an active member of a number of veterinary committees. Previously, she has lived in China working as the Veterinary Director at the Animals Asia Foundation, an NGO working to end the trade in bear bile across Asia.

Within the School her teaching duties include not only developing and coordinating the undergraduate veterinary animal welfare and ethics teaching, but also course organisation and lecturing for some postgraduate courses in the MSc International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law, MVetSci, and MSc clinical animal behaviour as well as lecturing on the MSc Applied Animal behaviour and welfare. 

Heather has previously been the recipient of the BSAVA J.A. Wight memorial award for outstanding contributions to the welfare of companion animals, the BVA Trevor Blackburn Award for raising standards of animal health and welfare in developing countries and the CEVA Chris Laurence Vet of the Year 2016 for her commitment to the continued improvement of animal welfare.
