A One Health outlook on falsified and substandard medicines

Speakers

Liam Morrison, Harriet Auty, Carla Perez Mon and Jess Mitchell

Host

Jess Mitchell, Carla Perez-Mon and Rob Ogden

Substandard pharmaceutical compounds are those which do not meet quality standards due to poor manufacturing and limited quality control. Falsified products deliberately misrepresent their composition, identity or source and can often be sold deceptively, for financial gain. Both substandard and falsified products can appear across human, animal and environmental health contexts.

Substandard and falsified medical products can be less effective, or ineffective, at treating illness. They can even be directly harmful if they contain toxic substances, and may be indirectly harmful through increased risk of antimicrobial resistance and via environmental contamination.

In this session we will hear from researchers involved in substandard and falsified pharmaceutical research globally and across One Health sectors.
