Principal's Medal award

Dr Andrew Gardiner, Senior Lecturer at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, will receive the Service to the Community award.

Now in their eighth year, the Principal's Medals celebrate the achievements and dedication of the University's community members. Recipients are nominated by colleagues or fellow students.

The other winner was Máire Cox, Communicator at OPENspace Research Centre, who receives the Exceptional Service medal.

Both 2015 winners will be presented with their medals during the November graduation ceremonies.

Community benefit

The Principal's Medal for Service to the Community honours a staff member or student who plays a key role in a project or service that has been of benefit to the wider community.

Dr Gardiner received the award in recognition of his innovation and practitioner skills in the field of public engagement and community outreach work.

He provided veterinary services to the pets of homeless people in Edinburgh and offered students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in practicing their subject in the community.

Exceptional service

The Principal's Medal for Exceptional Service recognises a staff member, or team, who makes a contribution to the University that far exceeds what is expected of their role.

Ms Cox received the award in recognition of her notable contribution in raising the profile, and enhancing the impact of, academic research in Edinburgh College of Art.

She did this amongst non-academic audiences through an extraordinary level of personal commitment and initiative.
