Equine Dentistry

Over the past 40 years the Dick Vet Equine Hospital has been at the forefront of advances in equine dentistry.

 

The Dentistry team is led by three senior clinicians making this one of the largest equine dentistry teams in the UK. Dr Mattie McMaster, a boarded specialist in equine surgery, Dr Beka Kennedy, a boarded specialist in equine dentistry and Dr Richard Reardon is dual-boarded in equine surgery and dentistry.

This Service is one of seven specialist-led services at the Hospital, and is supported by colleagues in equine medicine, anaesthesia, diagnostic imaging and orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery.

The Dentistry Service offers:

  • Advanced equine dentistry including investigation and treatment of dental pain, infections, diastemata/periodontal disease, fractures and complicated extractions
  • Investigation and treatment of head and sinonasal diseases including sinusitis, masses, trauma and fractures
  • Maxillofacial surgery and associated soft tissue conditions.

Facilities and diagnostic support

We offer comprehensive case work-up and treatment, including access to:

  • Two head CT scanners (fan-beam and cone-beam)
  • Additional advanced imaging, including nuclear scintigraphy
  • Multidisciplinary input for complex or concurrent medical/surgical problems.

Referrals and advice

The Dentistry Service is always open for referrals and also very happy to offer advice to clinicians and equine dental technicians, such as a second opinions, diagnostics, or full case management.

This expansion increases appointment capacity and strengthens our ability to support routine and complex dental, maxillofacial, and sinonasal cases.
