Carla Perez-Mon

Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Genomics - Pharmaceutical Forensics

Hello my dear new collaborator! I am an environmental microbiologist by training, with a background in Biology and Genetics. During my PhD at ETH-Zurich, I employed genomic approaches in conjunction with (geo)chemical tools to comprehend the structural and functional responses of soil microbial communities to climate change, and its implications in ecosystem functioning. I have also made contributions to genomic-based microbial ecological research in the areas of soil plastic pollution, nuclear waste management (deep-subsurface microbiology), and eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems. In my current postdoctoral role, I have successfully transferred my knowledge of genomics to the field of pharmaceutical forensics. In particular, I am developing eDNA next-generation sequencing and phylogeographic analyses to trace the geographic origin of falsified medicines through their associated (micro)biomes.

My postdoctoral fellowship is part of FORESFA's multidisciplinary project, whose overall goal is to improve our understanding of the epidemiology of substandard and falsified (SF) antimicrobials and their impact on global public health by adapting and evaluating forensic tools to identify sources and trade routes of SF antimicrobials.

I love to discuss new research ideas and get excited about anything related to microbiomes :D. So, if you have any funky project you would like to talk about do not hesitate to reach out!
