During 2016 building work got underway on the innovative new Equine Diagnostic, Surgical and Critical Care Unit at Easter Bush. The state of the art facility will further improve clinical care of our equine patients, while also enhancing student education and facilitating our world leading research. The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is carrying out an ambitious programme of facilities development at the Easter Bush Campus and a key component of this work is updating clinical facilities, to maintain our ability to carry out cutting edge clinical care and provide the best possible teaching environment. In 2016 the School broke ground on a new Equine Diagnostic, Surgical and Critical Care Unit, which will include transformed facilities for diagnostics and triage at the Equine Hospital. Included in the new facilities will be two new surgical theatres, a standing surgery suite and a Critical Care Unit with 24 hour video monitoring. A key component of the new unit will be a Support Hub, to enhance teaching and provide facilities for clinicians and nurses to plan treatments. In the second half of 2016 the majority of groundworks have been completed and the steel frame for the building has been erected. Now roof panels have been put in place and the concrete pour for the ground floor slab has begun. With the frame and floor slab completed, installation of the timber kit and wall cladding has also been able to begin. The School is hoping that by the end of 2016 the building will be water tight and it will be possible to begin the internal fit-out, which has also been carefully planned to provide an innovative and flexible clinical and teaching environment. This work has been helped by generous donations from alumni and friends, and is due to be completed in the summer of 2017.
