The Dick Vet was pleased to host the 3rd National Veterinary Student Research Conference. This event, funded through the BBSRC Strategic Training Awards for Research Skills (STARS) programme, has now become a shared fixture in the undergraduate calendar of UK vet schools. With invitations extended to all UK veterinary undergraduates, the conference provided a platform for presenting research data, as well as hearing from students and veterinary scientists about their choices and experience in this regard. Every vet school in the UK was represented amongst the 60 registered delegates, and they had the opportunity to enjoy highly informative and motivational talks from senior clinical research academics, as well as from PhD students within the Roslin Institute. Poster snapshot sessions provided an opportunity for each presenting delegate to “pitch” their research and invite further dialogue around their poster, and a select number of students were also given the opportunity to deliver oral presentations. With research topics ranging from evaluating natural essential oils as antimicrobials against MDR pathogens, through to optimising the diagnosis of prion disease, discovering the lifecycle of zebrafish parasites, and correctly ageing biting midges, there was something to pique interest at every turn, and the convivial and low stress format promoted both a sense of inclusion and free-flowing dialogue throughout the day. Prizes were awarded for best snapshot, oral and poster presentations, as well as for the best two equine-related research abstracts.
