Staff and Student Success at the British Small Animal Veterinary Association Congress

Undergraduate student Catriona Gillen became the latest recipient of the British Veterinary Behaviour Association (BVBA) Veterinary Studies Award. This makes it the third consecutive year that a student from the Dick Vet has either won or come runner up in the award. The award is a testament to Catriona’s hard work and the dedication to teaching animal welfare at the School.

Heather Bacon, Veterinary Welfare Education and Outreach Manager from the Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education (JMICAWE), was also successful at BSAVA. She was awarded The J.A. Wight Memorial Award, sponsored by Blue Cross.  This award is presented annually to a veterinary surgeon who has made an outstanding contribution to the welfare of companion animals.

First Animal Behaviour, Welfare & Ethics Session

Heather and Hayley Walters, also from the JMICAWE, were also responsible for organising the first ever BSAVA session on behaviour, welfare and ethics at Congress. Heather and Hayley gave three presentations each, which were open to both veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons. All sessions were completely sold out.  

Presentations included; street dog health and behaviour; geriatric welfare; welfare conundrums; acute pain and its welfare implications; good intentions and good welfare outcomes and improving patient welfare - what the vet nurse can do?
