The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies has announced a widening participation programme for students from underrepresented backgrounds who are keen to study veterinary medicine.

A fully-funded, week-long residential Summer School will be held between 24-30 July 2022. During the week, eligible students will be immersed in a full programme of activities to help them experience what life as a university student is like.

Student Experience

The Summer School will give eligible students a true insight into undergraduate life at the Dick Vet.

During the day, students will take part in a mixture of practical and classroom-based activities in subjects like internal medicine, veterinary clinical skills, pathology and public health at the Easter Bush Campus. They will also visit the School’s Hospital for Small Animals (including the Rabbit and Exotic Animal Practice), Equine Hospital and Large Animal Hospital, to learn more about what life as a veterinary surgeon is like.

In the evenings, a range of social activities will be available to the students so that they can embrace the city and its culture, and make the most from their time away from home.

Catered accommodation will be provided in University accommodation for the students taking part in the Summer School. Students’ return travel to Edinburgh from anywhere in the UK is also funded, and a free shuttle bus will transfer students to and from the Easter Bush Campus during the week.

“We understand that not all students have equal opportunities when it comes to accessing higher education and this is especially true for those from underrepresented groups. The Veterinary Diversity Summer School aims to break down the barriers that might prevent ethnic and religious minority students from applying to study veterinary medicine, and will provide real insight into university life.”

Gurå Bergkvist

Director of Admissions and Recruitment, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies
