Class of 2024 celebrates summer graduation

Family and friends join us in celebrating the achievements of our graduating students this summer.

The summer cohort graduated from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at two ceremonies in July 2024.

More than 170 students were joined by friends and family at the University’s McEwan Hall where they received their degrees. The ceremonies were streamed live for those who were unable to attend.

Undergraduate veterinary students from the School were awarded their Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degrees on Saturday 6 July. They were joined by students from the Global  Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems who were receiving their BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science (Global Agriculture and Food Security).

On Tuesday 9 July some of our postgraduate students received their qualifications from within the portfolio of taught and research degrees. The majority of the School’s postgraduate students will receive their awards in the winter graduation ceremony.

Prize-giving

The day before graduation, the School hosted the annual prize-giving ceremony for undergraduates.

The event was held at the Easter Bush Campus and was another opportunity for the 2024 graduands to be joined by friends and family.

Professor Lisa Boden, Head of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, welcomed more than 400 guests for a drinks reception followed by the presentation of over 80 prizes to graduating students for a range of academic and sporting achievements.

Professional declaration

Veterinary graduates attending the celebration made their Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) RCVS declaration. The RCVS declaration, which all vets are required to make, secures membership to the RCVS which marks the right to practice veterinary surgery in the UK. Declarations were made in the presence of RCVS President Linda Belton and RCVS CEO Lizzie Lockett.

In the declaration, graduates promise to pursue the work of their profession with integrity, to accept their responsibilities to the public, their clients, their profession and the RCVS, and to ensure the health and welfare of animals committed to their care.

Honorary degree

This year the University conferred an honorary Degree of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery to Dr Samuel Jebaraj Thevasagayam. Dr Thevasagayam is the livestock and aquaculture lead within the Agriculture Development Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The award was made in recognition of his outstanding influence in the field of international animal health.
