About

Welcome to the DIGEST clinic at the Hospital for Small Animals, The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies

The DIGEST clinic consists of a team of Small Animal Internal Medicine specialist vets and nurses dedicated to providing the best treatment and care for dogs and cats with problems of the digestive tract. We also offer specialist consultations around nutrition and obesity. Our combined aims are to simply provide outstanding service and care to our patients, clients and referring vets, offer new and innovative treatment modalities for chronic gastrointestinal problems and by doing this advancing research in the field of canine and feline gastroenterology.

The facilities at the Hospital for Small Animals are world-class and include state-of-the-art ultrasound, including specialist contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the gut, digital radiography including live fluoroscopy (for example for swallowing studies), CT (computed tomography) & MRI, and a brand new set of endoscopes specifically designed to meet the need for gastroscopies (investigations of the stomach), duodenoscopies (upper small intestine) and coloileoscopies (lower small intestine and large intestine) in dogs and cats. The system is also equipped with new visualisation options similar to narrow-band imaging (NBI), which enable us to assess disease in the gut in an entirely innovative way.

The DIGEST clinic does not work in isolation, but is part of the Internal Medicine Service at the Hospital, which is greatly supported by other specialities and services, for example Diagnostic Imaging, Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Cardiology, Neurology, Clinical Patholog and Pathology etc. We also work closely with other working groups at the hospital dedicated to improving frequent health concerns and conditions in our patients, for example the BREATHE clinic.

The DIGEST team  provides teaching and training opportunities for veterinary students, interns and residents which ensures that the next generation of vets share our passion for internal medicine and especially gastroenterology. We are committed to advancing small animal gastroenterology during veterinary undergraduate studies, and for local, national and international veterinary colleagues. We are actively advancing research which aims to provide a better understanding and treatment of disorders which commonly affect the digestive system in dogs and cats.

We would be delighted to offer free advice to referring vets on any gastrointestinal cases that they are managing. We are ready to accept canine and feline referrals through our Internal Medicine Service at any time (emergency referrals are also possible via the Hospital’s Emergency and Critical Care Service).

We are regularly in contact with referring vets and very much look forward to working with you in the future!

Our team is involved in a range of CPD events, congresses and societies, please find more information in the "useful links" section.
