Diploma success for Dick Vet duo

Veterinary nurse and exotic teaching facility manager are first in Scotland to achieve leadership and management qualification.

Two staff members from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies have become the first in Scotland to be awarded a Diploma in Veterinary Leadership and Management.

Shirley Simpson, a Senior Surgical Nurse at the Hospital for Small Animals, and Emma Boyd, Head of the School’s Exotic Animal Teaching Facility, now hold the highest qualification of this type awarded by the Veterinary Management Group (VMG).

Approved by the Institute of Leadership Management (ILM), this qualification is designed specifically for people working in the veterinary field who want to gain a leadership and management qualification.

To complete the Diploma, Shirley and Emma studied eight subject modules suited to their individual roles such as developing teams, project management, and coaching and mentoring in a veterinary environment.

I have really enjoyed building my leadership and management skills and look forward to applying this knowledge in my role of Senior Surgical Nurse at the Hospital for Small Animals.

It was invaluable to be able to share experiences and learn from others in the same field. I am confident that the skills and knowledge I have gained will allow me to progress and grow within my role.
