Training

Easter Bush Pathology offers postgraduate training opportunities for qualified veterinarians and contributes to teaching and outreach across the School.

Residency

Our residency programmes offer internationally recognised training and prepare veterinary graduates for specialist certifications, research and leadership roles.

Key aspects:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVetMed)
  • accredited by the European College of Veterinary Pathologists
  • delivered by a core team of senior pathologists holding DipECVP, FRCPath and DipACVP qualifications.

Residents may be eligible to sit internationally recognised board examinations, including:

  • American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Clinical Pathology)
  • European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology
  • Royal College of Pathologists

Training is based in an active diagnostic service, including necropsy and surgical biopsy. 

Caseload includes:

  • companion animals
  • equine
  • ruminants
  • wildlife
  • zoo species.

Residents contribute to the diagnostic workload, under supervision, developing practical skills and diagnostic confidence. 

Structured learning is provided through regular sessions, including:

  • surgical and gross pathology rounds
  • themed rounds, eg. neuropathology, zoo pathology
  • conference participation
  • journal clubs.

Each resident completes a research project with opportunities to collaborate with leading institutes such as:

  • Roslin Institute
  • Moredun Research Institute
  • MRC Harwell.

Our residents have progressed into roles in commercial and government labs and postgraduate research.


Residents receive comprehensive training in theory and practice across core disciplines:

  • clinical biochemistry
  • cytology
  • general clinical pathology
  • haematology.

Additional areas ensure a broad understanding of disease processes, such as:

  • histopathology
  • molecular diagnostic techniques
  • necropsy
  • serology

Residents complete a supervised research project to develop key academic and analytical skills.

Opportunities for externships with partner organisations are available to further enhance clinical exposure and professional development.

Our goal is to equip residents with the expertise, confidence, and professional credentials needed to excel in veterinary pathology careers worldwide.

Other contributions

Easter Bush Pathology staff are involved in several initiatives for prospective and current undergraduate veterinary students. 

Please note we are unable to offer:

  • Extra Mural Studies (EMS) placements from undergraduate students at other vet schools
  • work experience placements to secondary school students.

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies' Pathology Club

Placements can be requested by members looking to secure EMS placements in pathology. Applications should be made by email

Science Insights

An annual programme offered by the Roslin Institute and the MRC Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine for local school pupils considering careers in science. Participants shadow pathologists, participate in experiments and tour the facilities as part of a five-day timetable of events across the University. 

Diversity Summer School

A residential summer school offered to prospective veterinary students from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education. Participants gain an introduction to veterinary pathology hosted by our team as part of a week-long programme of events across the School.
