We accept a variety of qualifications for entry. 

If your qualification is not listed below, please contact vetug@ed.ac.uk for guidance, or look up our entry requirements by region.

Five-year veterinary programme 

A levels 

AAA in Chemistry, Biology and another approved subject

Advanced Placements (AP)*

444, or above, in Chemistry Biology and another subject.

We can also consider a combination of AP and SAT (700+) provided the subjects are different.

*prospective students applying with APs are encouraged to contact Admissions for guidance.

Canadian High School Diploma

Specific requirements vary depending on the Province, but typically we look for 85% in Chemistry and Biology with 80% in another subject.

Very high marks must be achieved in grade 12 courses, including Chemistry and Biology.

International Baccalaureate (IB) 

38 points overall, with at least 666 in Higher Level Chemistry, Biology and another subject. 

Pre-vet programmes

  • 2 years pre-vet or science courses at College or University
  • must include: Chemistry I and II (with lab), Biology I and II (with lab) and Organic Chemistry (with lab)
  • an overall GPA 3.4 (4 point scale) and high grades in all science subjects.

Four-year Graduate Entry Programme (GEP)

2:1 UK Honours degree, or international equivalent, or GPA 3.4 (4 point scale) in an appropriate subject. 

Candidates must achieve at least a C in: 

  • Biochemistry 
  • Biology/Zoology 
  • Inorganic Chemistry 
  • Mathematics/Statistics 
  • Organic Chemistry 
  • Physics 

Gaining at least a C in the below subjects can strengthen an application: 

  • Cell Biology 
  • Genetics 
  • Microbiology 

All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency. 

Most test results must be achieved within three and a half years of the start date of your degree. 

IELTS or Trinity ISE scores must be achieved within two years. 

Popular tests we accept: 

  • IELTS Academic module - overall 7.0, with 7.0 in each component 
  • TOEFL-iBT (including Home Edition) – 100 or above with 23 in each section 
  • Trinity ISE – ISE III with a pass in all four components 
  • A Level English Language, English Language and Literature or English Literature  
  • Cambridge English – Advanced or Proficiency overall 185 with 185 in each component 
  • IGCSE English as a first language – B 
  • IB – Standard level 5 (English ab initio is not accepted) 
  • HKDSE – English grade 5 
  • Malaysian SPM English plus Cambridge GCE O Level English 1119

Interviews

If you are successful after the initial application assessment, you will be invited to an in-person interview.  

Interviews are led by academic staff and family members are welcome to accompany you. 

Interviews take place in January and February in: 

  • San Francisco 

  • New York 

  • Edinburgh 

Interviews are also an opportunity to learn more about the School and meet recent graduates.   

Overseas fee status candidates are eligible to apply for the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies International Scholarship. 

There are two awards of £5000 per year for the duration of your degree programme, subject to satisfactory progress. 

Based on:

  • academic merit
  • performance at interview
  • a scholarship application statement. 

Region-specific funding may also be available.
