We offer routine and, when necessary, emergency appointments for your pets. We recommend a 6-monthly check up as part of your pet’s general health monitoring. During these consultations, our team will be happy to discuss your pet’s care, including it’s diet, exercise and social provisions. How to make an appointmentIf you would like to book an appointment with us, please contact our Client Care Team on 0131 650 7650 and select option 1. You can also e-mail us on HFSAreception@ed.ac.ukIf your pet is unwell out-with normal working hours, our emergency team can be contacted on our Out-of-Hours (OOH) emergency number on 0131 650 7883.Please note, if you are registered with another veterinary practice, you would need a referral from your own vet to be seen by our team.Consultations – what to expectWhen you arrive at the Hospital for Small Animals, you will be greeted by our reception team, who will notify the veterinary surgeon of your arrival. While you wait, you can sit in an area to the right of the main entrance which is specifically for rabbit and exotic patients. This allows your pet to wait away from dogs, helping to reduce their overall stress levels. When we see a pet for the first time, we allocate a 40-60-minute consultation to discuss all aspects of your pet’s care, as well as for your pet to have a clinical examination.Thereafter, our standard appointment slots are 30 minutes, in which we focus on the reason for your pet’s visit. As many of the species we see are excellent at hiding signs of illness, every time your pet comes to see us, they will receive a thorough clinical examination.Supporting educationAs a teaching hospital, we regularly have final-year veterinary students present during consultations. Our students are a key component of our practice and we pride ourselves on supporting their learning. The students will be months away from graduating and the skills and knowledge that they gain during consultations are essential as they join the next generation of vets. Our vets and nurses regularly share their knowledge and experience with other veterinary professionals and present at international conferences and career development events for veterinary practitioners. Information nightsVets and nurses from our practice run regular information nights for owners of exotic pets. Past events include: Rabbit Night, African Pygmy Hedgehog Night, Tortoise Night, Parrot Night and Chicken Night. These evenings are free to attend and open to all.If you would like to be included in our mailing list and notified of events, please e-mail our reception on hfsareception@ed.ac.ukRelated contentContact usFind us This article was published on 2024-09-02
