We are offering a vaccine that can be used off licence to reduce the clinical signs associated with sweet itch. Equine practices are using a vaccine to help reduce the clinical signs associated with sweet itch (midge bite hypersensitivity). While originally designed to treat ringworm in cattle, it can be used off license in horses that suffer from sweet itch. The vaccine isn’t a magic solution to treat these itchy horses and ponies, but when used in conjunction with other management practices, it may play a role in reducing signs. The vaccine is shown to be most effective if given before the horse shows any signs of sweet itch, so we usually recommend vaccinating around February with a second dose given two weeks later. If you would like to make an appointment or speak to one of our vets for more information, please get in touch with our reception team on 0131 650 6253 or email eqh@ed.ac.uk.
