Planning for an emergency and the DVEH Transport service

Do you have a plan in place should your horse suddenly become ill, or need to see a vet while you are away?

It is important to have a plan in place should your horse suddenly become ill, or need to see a vet while you are away, to make sure they can be cared for. Points to consider are:

  • Do I have transport if needed to send my horse in to a referral centre for further investigation/treatment?
  • Does my horse load and travel safely?
  • If I am on holiday, do others know who my veterinary practice is and how to contact me while I am away?
  • Do others know what to do per my wishes, if I am not contactable while I am away?
  • Does my practice have a list of who has permission/authority to make decisions in my absence?
  • Do I have adequate insurance cover for my horse for what I may need in future?
  • Does my horse have exclusions on the insurance policy?

The DVEP and DVEH have a 24/7 transport service to pick up your horse for transport to the Hospital for routine or emergency appointments.  The cost of the service is based on mileage from the Hospital. We also offer the option to book a vet to come out if sedation is needed for anxious horses for transport to the Hospital.  Please contact us on 0131 650 6253 or email eqh@ed.ac.uk for further details.
