Zoological Medicine Synoptic Assessment

A zoological medicine synoptic assessment is offered annually at the University of Edinburgh.

Oral examination

Content

Candidates working towards the designated Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Zoological Medicine) will need to complete the following modules:

Upon completion of all the necessary modules, a further synoptic oral assessment will also be required.

Oral assessment questions will be based around clinical scenarios. This allows the examiners to assess that the candidate can demonstrate coherence, integration and application of what they have learnt in the appropriate ZooMed modules that they have chosen and can demonstrate that their learning experience has constituted a coherent 'whole' that justifies the designation in Zoological Medicine.

Whilst our examiners will be using case material, photographs and other relevant material to ascertain that candidates are competent across the modules the candidate has already passed, they will not be using the oral examination to re-examine the theory learnt in the individual modules; instead they will expect the oral examination to allow them to assess how well the candidate can apply their knowledge in their current working environment, or how the candidate believes that their learning has contributed to a particular field of study.

The examiners will also be looking to ensure that the candidate has sufficient self-knowledge that they are aware of their own expertise, and when it may be more suitable to refer their patient to another veterinarian with greater expertise or to another centre with better facilities.

Length of time

45 minutes (lasting no more than 60 minutes).

Suggested month of oral exam

Assessment is normally in March each year and attendance for assessment at Edinburgh is required.
