Placement options

Eligibility

There are a limited number of placements for undergraduate students of Veterinary Medicine who are in their clinical years and studying at an AVMA, RCVS or EAEVE accredited vet school. 

What to expect

  • Observe and participate in clinical activities at the Hospital for Small Animals or Large Animal Hospital
  • Experience the UK veterinary clinical environment
  • Work alongside clinicians, interns, and final-year students
  • Attend ward rounds and team discussions 

Cost

  • No tuition fee
  • Estimated monthly living costs are £800–£1200

Timing

  • Applications are open all year round
  • Placements are typically late December, February and July
  • Placements are limited to a maximum of two weeks

Eligibility

Open to students from Ross University, St. George’s University, and St. Matthew’s University. 

Unless otherwise agreed, applicants should have a GPA of 3.0, or higher, and interests aligned with our clinical services.

What to expect

  • Full participation in 24 weeks of core and 8 weeks of elective clinical rotations
  • Integration with Edinburgh vet students and clinical teams
  • Academic support and regular feedback
  • 8-16 weeks of externships are required to fulfil the remaining clinical weeks required by AVMA and affiliate schools. We offer some in-house externship opportunities and provide guidance for securing others in the UK or your home country

NAVLE: Two ICVA Self-Assessments and faculty-led seminars

Eligibility

Final-year veterinary students from Colorado State University or the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. 

Expressions of interest must be registered through your university’s exchange process during the penultimate year. 

We are unfortunately unable to consider Erasmus+ students.

What to expect

  • Clinical placements occur February to May of the final year as part of selected rotations
  • Cross-cultural academic and practical learning
  • Collboration with Edinburgh vet students and clinical teams
  • Experience living and studying in Edinburgh

  • Applications should be made in semester 2 of your penultimate year
  • Placements are February to May of final year
