Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an exciting and relatively new diagnostic imaging technique which allows us for the first time to image soft tissue structures such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage within the equine foot.

The foot is often the site of pain causing lameness, particularly in the front limbs, and even the best quality x-rays can show only the bone within the foot.

Our MRI scanner (maintained by Hallmarq) is specially designed for horses and they are scanned in a standing position under sedation to prevent them moving too much.

With recent advances in software and hardware we are now also able to perform MRI scans higher up the limb.
