RCVS

The RCVS aim to enhance society through improved animal health and welfare. They do this by setting, upholding and advancing the educational, ethical and clinical standards of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in the UK. They are the UK’s registering body for veterinary surgeons and nurses. Members also have the opportunity to sit on their council.

RCVS Lifelong learning and CPD

RCVS quality assure undergraduate veterinary education and, under their Charter, offer postgraduate qualifications for both veterinary surgeons and nurses. They record and monitor professional CPD uptake. They also provide guidance on the specialist routes available to UK registered professionals. This includes access to career path guidance, support and funding opportunities.

BVA

As the largest membership community for the veterinary profession in the UK, they champion, support, and empower more than 18,000 vets of all ages, stages, and disciplines. The BVA provide opportunities to sit on their variety of committees to influence the veterinary professions role across the UK. They also provide pastoral support, CPD and career funding opportunities for registered members.

The European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS®) is composed of one voting representative from each of the 27 EBVS®-recognized veterinary specialist colleges, comprising more than 38 distinct specialties. It focusses on the specific education and training of veterinarians who are able to be licensed to practice as a veterinarian in Europe. Resources include guidance about the route to becoming a specialist and CPD activities available.

Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians – VTS in Small animal medicine, Neuro, Onco, Cardio

It is not a course! (you do not get course material or lectures), but a certification qualification in the relevant subspecialty. You have to do the learning on your own and decide if you are ready to start collecting your case logs when you have met the hour requirements etc, and feel your knowledge is good from the supplied knowledge lists, and have mastered all the supplied skill on the list. Its basically learn on the job certificate and send in your applications when ready (case logs, reports, CPD, hours etc) and if pass your then sit the exam to test your knowledge.

Girling & Fraser Training - Home (girlingandfraser.com)

This is the exotics certificate that is C&G approved. It has 5 courses which you can undertake individually to specialise in, or you can do all 5 courses which gives you the "advanced programme" title. You get 2 years to complete from the start date and you can sign up at any time. 

It covers:

  • Avian
  • Reptile
  • Wildlife
  • Zoo animals
  • Small mammals

These are the ones you can undertake individually, or you can sign up for all 5. You do not need to sign up for all at the same time either unless you are super keen and want to save money, but you have 2 years to complete from the date of sign up. Each programme is worth 50 hours of CPD. 

Harper Adams have a wide range of courses for veterinary nurses such as advanced nursing in oncology, anaesthesia, surgery, and rehabilitation.
