A credit-bearing short course in avian anaesthesia from within the MSc Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia portfolio. Avian Anaesthesia This course covers the physiological and anatomical differences of birds compared to mammals, particularly those which are of importance for anaesthetic management. 10 SCQF / 5 ECTS credits Course Leader: Juliet Duncan January start Species covered in lecture material will include common pet birds as well as water fowl. There will be opportunity for guided self-directed study of less commonly encountered avian species. The course supports students in developing knowledge of avian species. The content covers aspects of physiology and anatomy which have implications on anaesthesia management. Particular emphasis is placed on encouraging the application of knowledge to clinical anaesthesia in avian species, with the aim of improving anaesthetic management of these species for those in practice. Entry requirements This course is aimed at individuals working with animal anaesthesia who wish to develop their knowledge and critical thinking of avian anaesthesia. An undergraduate degree, with an excellent or very good classification (equivalent to first or upper second-class honours in the UK), in veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing or a degree in a related science subject with appropriate practical experience is required.
