High school pupils spent a week at all five research institutes of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Image Science Insights is an exciting work experience programme for 5th year high school pupils, giving them a real insight into the work and life of researchers. This year, forty pupils from schools across Scotland won places to spend a week of their summer holidays attending the programme, which involves scientists from all five research institutes and on all four campuses of the University of Edinburgh's College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Researchers from The Roslin Institute were involved in four days of the week-long programme, bringing their Flu Fighters activity to Monday's "Meet the Scientists" session, hosting all of the pupils for a visit to our farm to hear directly from our scientists about how their research is improving animal and human health and welfare, and talking about their own experiences at university on the programme's final day. At Easter Bush Campus, pupils took part in hands-on "Research Taster Sessions" and built on their practical skills in sessions hosted by the teaching team at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and the Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre. The week also included facility tours and workshops on science in the media and research ethics, including a session on the use of animals in research provided by Understanding Animal Research. We really enjoyed hosting so many enthusiastic and interested visitors!
