Ojonugwa Abubakar

PhD Student

Ojonugwa joined LBEP as part of the Wellcome Trust One Health Models of Disease programme. Her PhD project aims to trace the evolutionary history of the Staphylococcus genus and identify the major genetic events leading to species emergence, differentiation, and pathogenicity. Prior to working with Staphylococcus, she has also employed genomic approaches on other WHO bacterial priority pathogens like E. coli, Salmonella Typhi and Klebsiella pneumonia.


She holds a bachelors in Microbiology from the University of Ibadan Nigeria and completed an MSc in One Health: Ecosystems, humans and animals which was jointly delivered by the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Prior to her PhD, she worked on microbial genomics projects as a research assistant with the Holt Lab at LSHTM and also completed an internship with the Okeke lab at the Global Health Research Unit, University of Ibadan.
