Animal Behaviour & Welfare Group

The Animal Behaviour and Welfare group studies animal welfare using a multi-disciplinary approach which is helped by us working between the Roslin Institute and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC).  Animal welfare is a broad concept which is distinguished from other related science areas (animal science, animal health) by focusing on animals’ subjective or emotional experiences. Behaviour often plays a central role in our studies as it is widely accepted as the most direct way of interpreting animals’ emotions. We combine our behavioural studies with molecular biology, physiology and neuroscience to also address questions relating to mechanisms.
