Research at the Highlander Lab

My main research interest is in the development of novel breeding methodologies and tools. This work involves a synergy between theoretical, quantitative genetics and practical animal breeding.

Ongoing research:

  • Optimisation of long-term selection in layer chickens
  • Role of dominance in optimal contribution selection
  • Impact of mitochondrial genome on milk production traits in cattle
  • Development and optimisation of scalable genomic evaluation models

Background

Before taking a post at the Roslin Institute with Gregor Gorjanc, I have been a postdoc with Ignacy Misztal at the University of Georgia, US, where I also obtained my PhD. My main expertise is the application of genomic selection on big datasets for various species (pig, chicken, cattle, etc.) and various models, with emphasis on single-step genomic prediction. Previously, I worked at the Croatian department for breeding value estimation and obtained an MSc in Animal Genetics and Breeding, and BSc in Agricultural Economics at the University of Zagreb, Croatia.

I am specifically interested in:

  • Animal breeding
  • Quantitative genetics
  • Long-term sustainability of breeding programmes
  • Models for genomic evaluations
  • Mega-scale genomic evaluations

Programming language and software:

  • Bash shell scripting
  • R, SAS, JMP
  • Git version control system (CLI, GitHub, GitLab)
  • AlphaSimR
  • AlphaMate
  • Basic Fortran
  • BLUPF90 family of programs
  • MS Office
  • Experience with various server and cluster (HPC) environments
  • Experience with various OS (macOS, Windows and Linux distributions)

Hobbies and personal interests

  • Football
  • Videogames
  • Reading
  • Playing guitar
