I am working in the Houston group investigating the biology underlying disease resistance in aquaculture species, with a focus on infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) in Atlantic Salmon.

Favourite aquaculture species

Penaeus monodon, the giant tiger prawn. DELICIOUS.

Background

After early forays into epigenetics during my undergraduate and masters, I trained as a virologist in Finn Grey’s lab at the Roslin Institute. I researched host-virus interactions, dissecting the role of viral encoded microRNAs in regulating host gene expression during Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection.

Interests, hopes and dreams

When not working, husbanding, or parenting my 1 and 3 year old boys, I can be found riding my bike very long distances without stopping very much, often at the expense of sleep and square meals. I dream of a day when the family is old enough that they can all join me in my tours of the remote corner shops, bus shelters, and 24 hour service stations of southern Scotland.
