Research at the Highlander Lab

As a NERC research experience placement intern I worked on designing and simulating a cricket breeding programme in R to increase the production of crickets as a sustainable protein source.

Goals:

  • Gain an understanding of the R and AlphaSimR package
  • Understand the design of breeding simulations
  • Learn about crickets & cricket breeding

Background

I am currently studying Global Agriculture & Food Security at the University of Edinburgh, due to graduate in 2023. I moved to Edinburgh a couple of years ago from Basel, Switzerland. After completing my degree I hope I would like to work in sustainability consulting or policy development.

I am specifically interested in:

  • Innovative food production systems
  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Supply chain efficiency

Programming language and software:

  • R & RStudio
  • MAXQDA
  • MS Office

Hobbies and personal interests

I love cooking and trying out new recipes. Growing up, my family lived in Asia so I love trying to recreate all the foods we ate while living there. Yoga is one of my favourite activities to do since you have so much variety within the practice. However, no matter the intensity of the session you always leave the mat feeling balanced.
