Exploring the potential of selective breeding in crickets

Led by Gregor Gorjanc

Summary

This seeding project aims to explore the potential to increase the production of crickets via selective breeding. Crickets are considered a speciality food in many countries. They are one of the most popular edible insects, source of feed and food, rich in proteins, lipids and fibre. Further, they are highly efficient feed converters, have rapid growth and impressive reproduction. The currently used strains of crickets are essentially wild strains that have not yet been bred for improved performance. Availability of many wild populations combined with high genetic diversity, short generation intervals, high fecundity, and prolificacy highlight the huge potential to rapidly improve cricket production via selective breeding.
