Core Scientist Joana joined the lab in late 2022 as a postdoctoral research fellow. She is studying the restriction modification systems of Group B Streptococcus, specifically their influence in bacterial adaptation to different host niches. Prior to join the Lynskey lab, Joana worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Laboratory for Evolution and Pathogenesis at the Roslin Institute where she studied the molecular mechanisms of Staphylococcus aureus and Legionella pneumophila adaptation to the host innate immune responses. She completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences in the University of Porto and her graduate work was focused on the innate immune response to neonatal pathogens, especially Escherichia coli and Group B Streptococcus.
