Congratulations go to Professor Murdo MacLeod on being elected as the 2009 Temperton Fellow. Professor MacLeod, works as a consultant at The Roslin Institute following his retirement as a group leader. Professor Alan Archibald, Head of the Division of Genetics and Genomics, was keen to offer his congratulations for the honour noting that this is, "due recognition for [Murdo's] contributions to strategic and applied research over the years." The Temperton Fellowship was established to commemorate the contribution of Dr. Harold Temperton, Director of the National Institute of Poultry Husbandry at Harper Adams Agricultural College from 1951 to 1974. The fellowship is financed by the investments of the Temperton Trust is intended to extend the expertise which already exists in the industry and combine that with the resources in terms of staff and facilities which exist at the College. As the Temperton Fellow, Professor MacLeod has produced a report on a poultry-related topic. He has written a report on "The Importance of Research and Development in Supporting a Future UK Role in an Expanding Global Poultry Industry" and he presented it at the Farmers' Club in London on 8th June 2009. The intention is that the report will have a strategic benefit for the future well-being of the poultry industry. This isn't the first time that a member of the Roslin staff has received this honour; Professor Grahame Bulfield, former director of Roslin Institute, was the Temperton Fellow in 1994. Ken Laughlin of Aviagen, who has links with the Institute, was the elected fellow in 2007. This year we offer our congratulations to Professor MacLeod and look forward to reading the report.
