Data-driven breeding of resource efficient cattle

Led by Alireza Ehsani

Summary

The goal of this project is to use data-driven innovation tools to design a cost-effective and accelerated breeding scheme for feed efficiency in dairy cattle. Feed efficiency is an important production, economic, and environmental factor in cattle production. Feed accounts for as much as 50 per cent of total costs in dairy production. The dairy industry alone is worth £188bn globally, £56bn in Europe and £3.5bn in the UK. The proposed work has the potential to deliver about 1 per cent genetic improvement in feed efficiency per year with a value of ~£2m per year for the UK only.
