The LARIF Category 2 containment suites are designed for the controlled study of infectious diseases in farm animals. The containment suite provides animal holding areas and procedure and surgery rooms, enabling researchers to safely conduct experimental challenges using infectious pathogens. Two containment suites are available, allowing flexibility and enhanced biosecurity for parallel studies. Category 2The containment facility plays a critical role in studying the pathology and intervention of infectious diseases. The containment level 2 status allows the investigation of host immune responses to:infectionsthe evaluation of novel therapeutic strategiestransmission and tropismunderstanding pathogen virulencevaccinations. This research spans various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses and parasites and extends to investigating foodborne zoonoses in reservoir hosts. Researchers can work with multiple species of large animals; LARIF has particular expertise in cattle, sheep, and pigs. The suites have the potential to support poultry studies, with access to avian lines and resources from the National Avian Research Facility (NARF), located on the same campus.
