PhD Student

Research at the Highlander Lab

Main idea: My PhD project aims to study the genetic future of Norwegian Red Dairy Cattle (NRF) by examining its long-term genetic changes. The objectives will be pursued through three key work packages:

Goals

  • Analysing genetic diversity trends in NRF using tree sequence methods,
  • Evaluating trends in the mean and variance of traits in NRF, and
  • Optimizing breeding programmes by incorporating uncertainty into the selection process, focusing on optimal contribution selection.

Background

Two to three phrases about your background: I completed my bachelor's degree in animal science in Colombia and an MSc in Agricultural Science and Resource Management (ARTS) in Germany. Right now, I’m working on my PhD at HighlanderLab. I believe animal breeding plays a crucial role in driving positive change in the livestock industry, especially in promoting sustainability. Achieving a balance between genetic gain and genetic variance is essential for the long-term success of breeding programs.

I am specifically interested in:

  • Optimal Contribution Selection
  • Optimal Mate Allocation
  • Understanding tree sequencies and its applications
  • Statistic & Maths
  • Programming

Programming language and software:

  • R and RStudio
  • Python
  • Basic Bash

Hobbies and Personal Interests

jogging, cycling, CrossFit, cooking, gardening, and spending quality time with my family (JOI).
