Gonzalo joined Ross Fitzgerald's lab in 2017 as a postdoctoral research fellow. He applied comparative genome sequence analysis in order to understand Staphylococcus aureus evolution, dispersion and host adaptation.

Previously, he had worked as a postdoctoral researcher (2013-2016) on HIV molecular phylodynamics with Prof Andrew Leigh Brown, also in the University of Edinburgh. Specifically, he studied the HIV evolutionary history and geographic propagation as well as transmission dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa. Before moving to Edinburgh, Gonzalo completed his PhD (2012) in Madrid, Spain, working on the molecular epidemiology of HIV.

His main research interests are molecular epidemiology and evolutionary dynamics of pathogens and the application of phylogenetic analyses to these fields. In 2021, Gonzalo joined the bioinformatics team for Public Health Scotland investigating the genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2.
