Fellowships for innovative Easter Bush scientists

Two early career scientists at Easter Bush have been awarded one of the University’s most prestigious fellowships.

Dr Alexa Bellows and Dr Jessica Mitchell are among 10 academics announced as the latest Chancellor’s Fellows within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (CMVM).

The five-year tenure track scheme invests in outstanding early career researchers carrying out cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and innovation.

Food systems

Dr Alexa Bellows, of the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems, uses epidemiology and systems science to study how food system transformations can promote the adoption of healthy and sustainable diets.

As a Chancellor’s Fellow, she will develop new methods to advance food systems science and establish the Food Systems Monitoring and Evaluation Hub (MENU) at the University.

Antimicrobial resistance

During her Fellowship, the Roslin Institute’s Dr Jessica Mitchell will focus on understanding the drivers and impacts of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in wildlife.

She will take a transdisciplinary approach to this challenge by engaging the conservation and wildlife veterinary sector as co-producers of knowledge and data via community engagement interventions.

Her vision is to ensure data AMR in the wildlife and conservation sector is incorporated into One Health action planning at a global level.

University fellowships

The new Fellows in CMVM are part of a larger group of 39 early career researchers across the University’s three Colleges.

Their pioneering work spans health and care, environmental sustainability, data, digital, AI and more.

Future vision

The University has awarded Chancellor’s Fellowships since 2014. They are designed to help the most promising academics advance from the early stages of their career to more senior roles, and to empower their ground-breaking research.

Fellows will be supported through tailored programmes to help them build a successful track record of research and innovation, and transition into future leaders in their fields.

The scheme has a strong track record of supporting Fellows to win significant funding and establish their own research groups.
