Avian Research Symposium 2024 Last month we hosted the 4th Avian Research Symposium. The symposium was organised and hosted by early career researchers from The Roslin Institute and SRUC, with sessions chaired by Roslin colleagues. It was a truly international meeting, with up to 100 delegates online at any one time attending from several countries including China, Russia, Brazil, Italy, India, Poland, Mexico and Tunisia. There were 40 excellent talks in all over the three afternoons, and our invited speakers Dr Filip Van Immerseel (Ghent University, Belgium), Prof Benjamin Schusser (Technical University of Munich, Germany), Dr Jérôme Gros (Institut Pasteur, France), and Dr Yang Liu (Sun Yat-sen University, China) opened the sessions and set the tone in a vibrant and enthusiastic style. The standard of all talks was extremely high and emphasises the standard of research using avian model systems globally. The organising committee would like to thank all those that submitted abstracts, our presenters, chairs, and keynote speakers. Prize Winners We are delighted to now announce the winners for the best talks, with prizes generously sponsored by Zeiss and The Roslin Institute. Image Long talk format prize winners 1st Prize Eirini Maniou, University of Padova, Italy, Dynamic quantification of mechanical forces during chick neural tube closure Runners up Matthew Biegler, The Rockefeller University, New York, USA, Improving zebra finch germ cell cultures with single-cell analysis Rosemary Blake, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, UK, Identifying host dependency factors for avian Influenza virus in chicken using genome-wide Short Talk Format prize winners 1st Prize Margo Chase-Topping, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, UK, Impact of vaccination and selective breeding on the transmission, survival and virus load of Marek’s disease virus: a natural transmission study Runner up Anum Ali Ahmad, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, UK, Influence of IL10 Knock-out and Lysozyme Codon-replaced Mutations on the Caecal Microbial Community of Chicken Image Long talk format prize winners 1st Prize Memo Tellez, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, UK, Making Muscle: Generation of Myogenic Progenitors from Avian Germ Cells Runners up Heer Joisher, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, Characterization of the development of the high-acuity area of the chick retina Emma Armstrong, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, UK, The Immunological Mechanisms of In Ovo Vaccination Short Talk Format prize winners Joint 1st Prize Yesica Mercado-Ayon, University of California, Los Angeles, USA, Assessment of floor plate vs progenitor derived netrin1 function during spinal cord development Karen Keegan, Mordun Institute, Edinburgh, UK, Evaluating DNA extraction methods for avian gut microbiome research via Nanopore sequencing Runner up Louisa-Mae Kosin, The Roslin Institute, Edinburgh, UK, The effects of light during incubation on white Leghorn layer chick development and behaviour Organisers The Avian Research Symposium is organised by early career researchers at the Roslin Institute, Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Scotland's Rural College, and The Roslin Institute’s National Avian Research Facility at the Easter Bush Campus, UK. 2024 Organising Committee: Joe Rainger, James Glover, Violeta Trejo-Reveles, Holly Hardy, Sam Sives, Jon Riddell, Ricky Corona Torres, Adrianna Vallejo-Trujillo, Sudeepta Panda, Zoe Sudderick, Dominique Meunier, and Salvatore Galgano.
