My name is Susan Jarvis, I'm a senior lecturer in animal science but my main background has been in the research area of animal welfare science. My main role within the global academy is to develop, deliver and to oversee the development of the undergraduate degree programs and that also includes being program director for one of the degrees which is in agricultural science with the specialism in animal science.

I think the issues around the growing population, sustainable agriculture and food security is probably the most important topic to be working on, we need to be able to feed the population well and we have to really do this in a way which is interdisciplinary in order to tackle these global challenges that we face.

When we're thinking about feeding a growing population well and in a sustainable way, then for me it's really important to ensure that we protect the welfare of animals within these systems and of course ensuring animal welfare means that that leads to systems being more sustainable because if systems are socially unacceptable then they are in essence not sustainable and so the role of animal welfare within sustainable agriculture for me is a really important topic.

So I think one of the the biggest challenges is actually translating the research into practice and I don't just mean within the agricultural industry but within society, generally we know what we should be doing and how we should be behaving but the reality is often different so trying to work with social sciences and understand more about behavior change and how we can facilitate change through perhaps education.

I really love the challenge of research and the tackling research questions but I also really love the education part of my role, I really love to see students come to us and learn and develop and gain skills that they can then take into their own careers and tackle some of these challenges that we're talking about and it's so rewarding when you hear of students who've gone out into the world and are doing amazing things and to try and tackle these issues and to find solutions, so that I would say is probably the most rewarding part of my job and can be really impactful.
