Award honours support for community initiative

Sustainability prize recognises efforts to deliver food parcels to local people during the Covid-19 pandemic.

An academic from the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security has won an award from the University’s Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability (SRS) for work to support communities.

Dr Kirsteen Shields, Lecturer in International Law and Food Security, was nominated by colleagues for the SRS Changemakers’ Award.

The prize is given to Dr Shields for coordinating volunteers to help Cyrenians and FareShare provide emergency food deliveries to vulnerable people across Central and South East Scotland during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Project benefits

The accolade recognises individuals who have made a noticeable positive impact at the University, by undertaking a successful socially responsible or sustainable project, or by inspiring others to act in a more socially responsible or sustainable way.

The judges noted the efforts made to spearhead such an impactful project at a time of crisis. They also recognised its benefit to a local charity and local people, and that it demonstrated the University's values and strategy, particularly working with local communities, and encouraged students to take ownership by becoming team leaders.

The Changemakers Award follows the award of an Outstanding Student Leadership prize from GAAFS to masters student Julian Mashingaidze, in recognition of his involvement in the FareShare/Cyrenians initiative, established by Dr Shields.

Sustainability Awards are formally announced at an online celebration.

It’s good to have this recognition and I‘m grateful to accept the award on behalf of the staff and student volunteer team who gave their time in the Leith depot, many from the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security, including our Director Professor Geoff Simm. I would also like to acknowledge and thank everyone at the Cyrenians FareShare for letting us in and showing us how to help.
