Pet Accident & Emergency: Healthy Hearts

Location: Easter Bush Science Outreach Centre, University of Edinburgh Easter Bush Campus, EH25 9RG.

Minimum attendance: 16*

Maximum attendance: 34

Duration: 4 hours

Times: 10am - 2pm

Cost:  £3  per pupil

Workshop Description

Find out how vets help pets in an emergency, learn all about blood and the circulatory system and help our vets choose the right treatment for Buddy the dog.

The workshop was really interesting and made me feel like a pro!

Primary Pupil, Midothian Age 10

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the function of the heart
  • To describe the similarities and differences between dog and human circulatory systems
  • To identify the major types of blood cells
  • To diagnose Buddy the dog’s illness using real evidence
  • To reveal the world of work in a small animal hospital 

Workshop Activities 

  • Listening to the heart using stethoscopes
  • Blood volume numeracy activity
  • Using microscopes to examine real blood samples
  • Hands-on blood cell modelling activity
  • Blood typing experiment
  • Discussion with vets, vet nurses and students from The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies that work in the Hospital for Small Animals
